About Blue & Gold Club

About Blue & Gold Club, Inc.

Founded in 1980, Blue and Gold is a 501(c) (3) non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of education at Everett High School. Our goal is to empower students to develop into responsible and resilient adults able to make significant contributions in their families, careers, and in the community. We are a stand-alone organization made up of parents, community leaders, teachers, alumni, administrators, and students. Because we are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff, we are able to return a very high percentage of contributions directly to the community. Typically, administrative expenses are less than 3% of our budget.
Applications for assistance are considered on a case-by-case basis and input from teachers, administrators, coaches, and peers may be used in the evaluation process. Usually, we provide general assistance to 1,800 students with more than 600 students receiving discrete individual aid. Approximately 95% of individual awards went to students living in low-income homes. Academics, leadership, athletics, and the recognition of individual achievement are among our top priorities. While a percentage of our budget is used for students living in higher-income homes, financial need is always a key consideration. Other considerations need, ability, and overall cost of the experience. Student assistance can range from something very small like a pair of track shoes or scientific calculator to larger sums for out of state travel to receive an award for merit or for advanced education.

Over the last several decades the out-of-pocket cost to parents and families to send a child to public school has steadily increased. Items like field trips, athletic equipment, scientific calculators, books that are required but not provided by the school, and out of school enrichment activities now constitute a significant family expense. For the working poor and families struggling with poverty (especially if more than one child is in high school), these items and experiences are frequently out of reach. In our area, school budgets have been progressively slashed putting even greater pressure on both parents and school administrators to make ends meet.

For many disadvantaged students it is the discreet administration of aid that makes the difference between active involvement in the vibrant social and academic life at Everett High and the loss of interest, diminished self-esteem, and poor academic performance that lead so many to give up and drop out. Blue and Gold makes a lasting difference in lives of students struggling with poverty. The many laudatory letters that we receive from the recipients, teachers, administrators, and coaches confirm the effectiveness of our program.
